Sedation and Sleep Dentistry
At Camberwell Road Dental, we understand that many patients experience anxiety, fear or discomfort when visiting the dentist. Our Sedation and Sleep Dentistry services are designed to help you feel calm, comfortable and relaxed throughout your dental treatment – from routine care to more involved procedures. Sedation allows us to tailor your experience to your individual needs, ensuring you receive the care you require without stress or fear.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is a mild, inhaled form of sedation often referred to as “laughing gas.” Delivered through a comfortable mask, it quickly induces a sense of calm and relaxation while you remain awake and responsive. Because the effects wear off rapidly once the gas is stopped, many patients can return to their normal activities soon after their appointment. This option is ideal for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety or those undergoing shorter procedures.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed tablet before your appointment. It produces a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide and helps many patients feel drowsy and tranquil throughout their treatment. While you will still be conscious, you may have limited memory of the procedure afterwards. Because oral sedation can cause lingering drowsiness, we ask that someone accompany you to and from your appointment. This method is excellent for patients with moderate dental anxiety or for treatments that may take longer.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
IV sedation delivers medication directly into your bloodstream, creating a controlled, semi-conscious state often referred to as “twilight sleep”. Many patients drift in and out of sleep and have little to no memory of the procedure. Throughout your treatment, your vital signs are closely monitored by our trained team to ensure your safety and comfort. IV sedation is particularly beneficial for patients with severe anxiety, a strong gag reflex, those undergoing longer or more complex treatments.
General Anaesthetic
For patients requiring the highest level of comfort – such as extensive oral surgery, complex extractions, or when deeper levels of sedation are medically indicated – general anaesthetic may be recommended. Under general anaesthetic, you are completely unconscious for the duration of your procedure, with a specialist anaesthetist monitoring your care. This option ensures you won’t be aware of the procedure and will wake up without any memory of the experience.
